Discovery of a Possible Anomalous X-ray Pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report the serendipitous detection of a previously unreported pulsar from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud using data from the CHANDRA X-Ray Observatory. Because of its luminosity (∼ 1.5× 10 ergs/s), its near lack of variability for more than 20 years, and its soft spectrum we propose that it is an anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). Data from the ROSAT PSPC in conjunction with the CHANDRA data give a period, P , of 5.44 s and a spin down time, P/Ṗ , of 11 ky. If this is a correct identification it will be the first extragalactic AXP and the fastest yet discovered.

Archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud serendipitously reveal a possible counterpart to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar CXOU J010043.1−721134. The candidate is faint, but its location and strange colours make it an interesting object. We estimate , that the probability of such a detection being due to a non-physical source is less tha...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 9-s X-Ray Pulsar, AX J0049−732, in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We report on an ASCA discovery of a new X-ray pulsar, AX J0049−732, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The pulse shape is sinusoidal with a barycentric period of 9.1320 ± 0.0004 s. The X-ray spectrum was fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of 0.6 −0.7 and a column density of 1.3 −1.3 × 10 22 cm. An unabsorbed flux at 0.7–10.0 keV was estimated to be 8× 10 erg cm s corres...

We report the serendipitous detection of two previously unreported pulsars from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud, with periods of 16.6 and 25.5 seconds. The detections are based on archival PCA data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The observation leading to these detections occurred in September 2000 extending over 2.1 days with an exposure of 121ks. A possible identific...
متن کاملDiscovery of a new Transient X-Ray Pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Systematic Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed a previously unknown transient X-ray pulsar with a pulse period of 95s. The 95s pulsar, provisionally designated XTE SMC95, was detected in three Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observations during an outburst spanning 4 weeks in March/April 1999. The pulse profile is double peaked reac...
متن کاملDiscovery of an X - Ray Pulsar in the SMC : AX J 0058 − 7203
We report on the discovery and analysis of an X-ray pulsar, AX J0058−7203, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This pulsar exhibits coherent pulsations at P = 280.3 s with a double-peak structure. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a simple power-law model of photon index Γ ∼ 0.7. No significant change of the pulsation period over the observation was found. A comparison with ROSAT observations i...
